Top 5 Kuala Lumpur Highlights:

In no particular order.

  1. Batu Caves:

top to do in KL

Before arriving in KL I did some research into what to do with only a few days to explore. I saw some posts on the ‘Batu Caves’ and my mind immediately jumped to picturing us scaling the wall in a secret bat-themed underground cave. We learned that the cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India, and since we had just flown to KL from Kochi, India we knew we had to go check it out.

The caves are located just outside of KL on the KTM Komuter Line. There are signs posted telling you which direction the Batu Caves are. The cave itself is fairly interesting. The large staircase makes for a great photo.

There are many monkeys at the top of the stairs so do not bring any plastic bags or food. We saw quite a few people attacked by these little guys.

2. Chinatown Market:

night market KL

to do in Kuala Lumpur

Every night at sunset, stalls are set up along Petaling Street and surrounding areas. We found the KL Chinatown Market to have the best balance of everything: electronics, textiles, clothes, designer fakes, souvenirs, fruit, and street food. Read more about this market here!!

3. KLCC Park:

best park kuala lumpur

We are total park people. My favourite quick searches in any new city are “ city name vegan food”, “city name best park”, and “city name fruit market”. Parks are always a beautiful escape from a big city, a look into local city life, and best of all; free! KLCC park is located right adjacent to the Petronas Towers. Here in the park you can get a great photo of the iconic Petronas Towers while viewing some nice manmade lakes, a small jogging track, greenery areas, one hell of a fancy fondue water fountain, and the largest area of children parks i’ve seen in one place.

The fanciest water fountian in KL?

For some reason or another I was not allowed to take the swings for a test ride, as security came and told us to leave. We did however manage to have a pull up contest in the monkey bar area- the world is our gym!

4. Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery Buffet:

to do in Kuala Lumpur

Traveling as a vegan in South East Asia can be fun. At times it pushes you to try local joints and really get a feel for local vegetarian life and cuisine. This is a great tour of what Malaysian vegan food is all about. At Dharma Realm Guan Yin Sagely Monastery everyday there is a large buffet. Filled to the brim with fruit, veggies and more! Neither me nor Colin are huge shoppers, especially when we are travelling lightly but its fun to walk around sometimes and take it all in. Kuala Lumpur is famous for the malls. Everywhere and everything is a large mall. We enjoyed walking through the technology mall and the Mega mall. Tip: At the bottom of the Mega Mall there is a stand selling the worlds sweetest most amazing sweet potatoes ever. The AEON also has vegan chocolate bars.
